Energy storage is the key to integrating renewable energy into the grid

It is essential to guaranteeing energy stability and reliability to families, communities and companies in the future.

Variable renewable energy resources form a challenge for both power generators and grid operators. While the first ideally seeks to provide power at peak times when the price is high, the latter needs to ensure grid stability.

Energy storage systems allow for greater control and flexibility of electricity usage, enabling energy created by renewables to be stored during periods of low demand or low cost to be utilised in periods of high demand or high cost.

An energy storage system can save cost and improves grid stability at the same time, smartly addressing the increasingly strict rules imposed by grid operators for ramp rates and forecasting, scheduling and dispatch.

There are many forms of energy storage such as:

  • Solid State Batteries – a range of electrochemical storage solutions, including advanced chemistry batteries and capacitors
  • Flow Batteries – batteries where the energy is stored directly in the electrolyte solution for longer cycle life, and quick response times
  • Flywheels – mechanical devices that harness rotational energy to deliver instantaneous electricity
  • Compressed Air Energy Storage – utilizing compressed air to create a potent energy reserve
  • Thermal – capturing heat and cold to create energy on demand
  • Pumped Hydro-Power – creating large-scale reservoirs of energy with water
